Is TikTok coming for … Amazon?!
Jan 24, 2024Get in early on this TikTok feature…
How many times in the past year have you heard about a new product through TikTok? Or seen a trend explode, guided largely by TikTok product content going viral? (Hello, Stanley cups). Well, now the platform is paying attention to those buying decisions — and is hoping users will start to make those purchases through the platform.
According to reports this month, TikTok is planning to 10X its ecommerce business, TikTok Shop, in a challenge to shopping behemoth Amazon. We’ve been hearing rumblings about a move like this for a while, and it makes perfect sense: TikTok already has the eyeballs and systems in place to get people to purchase. Becoming a competitor to Amazon doesn’t feel like a crazy stretch.
How can you use this? If you have a product or ability to set up shop through TikTok, this could be a great opportunity that will likely favor early adopters. Plus, if you’re affiliated with products, this should be an even easier way to earn affiliate revenue.
If you don't have a product, what does this mean for you? Don’t put all your eggs in the TikTok basket, and don’t discount other platforms like YouTube or Instagram. If TikTok moves toward highlighting product-focused content, the platform could eventually deprioritize other forms of content from personal brands or entrepreneurs.
