During Meta Platforms Inc.’s third-quarter earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Reels, their answer to TikTok's short video format, has evolved from its beta stages into a core feature of their platforms. Zuckerberg mentioned that Reels has contributed to over a 40% increase in Instagram usage time since its inception. CFO Susan Li highlighted their plans to enhance Reels' advertising effectiveness through ranking upgrades and heightened user interaction. She also expects Reels to modestly increase revenue in 2024. Initially launched on Instagram and Facebook in 2020 and 2021 to rival TikTok, recent surveys indicate 74% of Instagram users now utilize Reels, up from 62% in March the previous year.
